KwaZulu-Natal police have warned suspects to surrender to lawful orders when approached by officers, saying failure to adhere to such orders may end badly.
Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made these remarks at the launch of the Safer Festive Season Campaign in Durban on Thursday.
Various law enforcement agencies including police, the Durban Metro Police, the Road Traffic Inspectorate, the Border Management Authority and private security companies attended the launch.
Authorities said thousands of officers in various units will be deployed in parts of the province during the holiday period.
Mkhwanazi called for cooperation and said: “Please surrender because of you do not surrender it might not end well, not on your side because we do not want to traumatise our own law enforcement officers for engaging in a fight with you.”
He added that anyone resisting police instructions, shouldn’t expect officers to fold their arms.
“So, anyone who fights with police officers must expect a fight back and that is just how it is.”
