Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu can’t seem to catch a break after the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry heard claims linking him to alleged criminal Katiso "KT" Molefe.
Testifying before the commission on Wednesday, former member of the political killings task team, Captain Maxwell Wanda, shed light on Molefe’s December 2024 arrest.
Wanda claims that during the raid at Molefe’s home, he was informed by a man who appeared to be Molefe’s bodyguard or driver that Mchunu was friends with the alleged underworld boss.
The task team had carried out the takedown operation to arrest Molefe in connection with the murder of Vereeniging engineer, Armand Swart.
Captain Maxwell Wanda said that during the police raid at Molefe’s home, he encountered a man named Lehasa Moloi in Molefe’s yard.
He said that Lehasa asked him for water and a cigarette, which Wanda then requested Molefe’s eldest son to provide.
But that was not the end of their interaction, as Captain Wanda claimed that Lehasa made a jaw-dropping remark after smoking his cigarette.
"He asked me a question that 'What is going to happen now because the arrested person is the friend of the minister of police?' I asked him who the minister is and he said the minister of police. I asked him if it was honourable Senzo Mchunu and then he said yes."
Mchunu has also been accused of having ties to another suspected underworld figure, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.
However, Mchunu denied in Parliament last week that he’s linked to any criminal figure.
