With less than three weeks to go, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said that the province is officially ready to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
South Africa assumed the G20 presidency at the end of 2024, making it the first African nation to chair the bloc of developed and developing economies.
The country will host the final talks over two days at Nasrec Expo Centre, in the south of Johannesburg, where the G20 heads of state will decide on a declaration of key policy positions to take forward on the global stage.
This includes resolutions to ensure economic growth, managing the debt crisis in emerging markets, geopolitical tensions and climate change.
Lesufi said months of intense preparations are paying off.
“The Gauteng government can now formally [announce] its readiness to host the prestigious G20 Leaders’ summit.”
Following criticism about window dressing for the global leaders, Lesufi said the G20 preparations will also now be used as new template for accelerated service delivery after the summit.
“We’ve resolved that even beyond the summit, the Tuesday meetings that we hold every week to prepare will continue even beyond the G20 so that we can convert them to service delivery meetings - not only so we can beautify our province, but also so municipalities can expedite service delivery.”
