CoJ Transport MMC Kunene calls for specialised unit to probe taxi industry killings

City of Joburg Transport MMC Kenny Kunene has called for the creation of a dedicated task team to investigate murders in the taxi industry.

Kunene was speaking at the funeral of slain taxi boss Molefe Victor Moekeletsi held in Midrand on Saturday.

The 52-year-old chairperson of the Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand and Sandton Taxi Association, known as ARMSTA was gunned down in Marlboro, north of Johannesburg, last week.

He died alongside one of his bodyguards, while another bodyguard and a motorist were injured in the attack.

Addressing those at the service, which was streamed on social media, Kunene said a special unit, similar to the political killings task team in KwaZulu-Natal, should be formed to probe the growing number of taxi-related murders
 
"The biggest problem is you never see arrests when taxi people are killed. But when politicians are killed, they use the power that they have to commit resources to protect themselves. The taxi industry is a very important stakeholder, especially in the transport department, in the economy of our country, because transport drives the economy of any country."

Moekeletsi will be laid to rest at the Fourways Memorial Park.
