The Southern African Development Community has expressed its appreciation to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for taking up the role of interim chair.
The decision was made during an extraordinary summit of SADC heads of state and government, held virtually on Friday.
This follows Madagascar's decision to step down amid escalating political instability in the island nation.
With this decision, South Africa, which was originally due to assume the chairmanship in 2026, will now serve as interim chair until August next year.
A statement issued after the meeting said the SADC secretariat would consult member states and announce a new incoming chair by the end of November.
