The City of Cape Town has confirmed that a phased reopening of municipal swimming pools has begun in time for the summer season.
The city's Recreation and Parks Department manages 37 swimming pools across the metro, five of which are open all year round.
Currently, 22 pools are already open. Following the completion of scheduled works, a total of 29 pools will be open by the end of November, with 36 set to be operational by 12 December for the school holidays.
The Vulindlela swimming pool in Gugulethu will remain closed pending upgrades.
Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, addressed the closures in a statement.
"Some facilities cannot reopen immediately due to ongoing maintenance and upgrade projects. The upgrades vary by site and include structural, civil, and mechanical plant room repairs, maintenance, and upgrades. The city is committed to providing quality, safe facilities to its residents, and the Recreation and Parks Department are working closely with contractors to ensure that timelines are adhered to."
