The City of Ekurhuleni has significantly enhanced its capacity to combat crime and improve service delivery by adding 68 new vehicles and eight high-tech motorbikes to its Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) fleet.
On Wednesday, the city kicked off its festive season road safety campaign with a major stop-and-search operation that temporarily brought traffic to a standstill on Zuurfontein Road in Kempton Park.
Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza stated that the timing of the launch was crucial, as the new resources would also support security efforts ahead of the G20 Summit, where world leaders are scheduled to meet later in November in nearby Johannesburg.
Mayor Xhakaza issued a strong warning against reckless driving in the city: "Ekurhuleni is not a playground, and in this festive season, we are up with everything in our power to ensure that we push back."
The new fleet is expected to bolster the EMPD's presence on major roads and in key crime hotspots, ensuring the safety of residents and visitors during the holiday period and the high-profile international event.
