Police in KwaZulu-Natal say the self-confessed associate of suspended Crime Detection head, Shadrack Sibiya, has invited police investigations following his recent claims.
Stuart Sharnick accused the police of tarnishing his reputation after Crime Intelligence boss, Dumisani Khumalo, listed his criminal history in the Madlanga Commission.
However, police in KZN fired back on his claims.
The province’s deputy head responsible for Crime Detection briefed the media on the matter in Durban.
Police in KwaZulu-Natal said that Sharnick was now the subject of an investigation.
They said that his claims that Crime Intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo, tarnished his image prompted them to look into his criminal history.
This led to findings that his criminal record on the SAPS system was tampered with.
KZN deputy commissioner for Crime Detection, Anthony Gopaul: "What alarmed is that these cases are in KZN. General Khumalo is not here, Lt-General Khumalo doesn’t work in KZN - he works there but he knows and is talking about our KZN cases. Mr Sharnick, as if we are non-existing KZN, he talks about it there, so that is what informed us to go and look for these cases and we draw these cases dockets."
Gopaul added that their probe had various elements.
"In part of looking into Sharnick’s profile, we picked up a lot of other things."
Sharnick’s criminal history also included possession of firearms and carjacking.
