There is a fair amount of cynacism from many Johannesburg residents about the city's "clean-up" ahead of the G20 Summit taking place later this month.

However, veteran journalist Ferial Haffajee sees it through a more optimistic lens.

"Let's take the gains. Suddenly we've got verges cleaned, many many potholes have been filled – it's not so death-defying to drive on our roads anymore."

But not all is glittering in the City of Gold...

Haffajee has often used the phrase "governing through spectacle" to describe the political style of Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi. So what will happen after the G20 has come and gone?

"We've got a very active civil society... and I think there's consensus among them that we can't let this just be a case of having put lipstick on the potholes – you have to see these changes being sustained after the G20."
