Suspect nabbed with pistol and ammunition in Philippi East

Police in Philippi East successfully seized a 9mm pistol and a large cache of ammunition yesterday, finding the illegal firearm concealed within a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) army jacket.

The discovery was made during routine patrols in the area. Police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that officers found 47 rounds of ammunition along with the handgun.

"Philippi East Police were conducting crime prevention duties in the area, when they spotted a suspicious-looking male and during a search they found a 9mm pistol inside a South African army jacket and 47 rounds of ammunition," Gwala stated.

A male suspect was arrested and is scheduled to appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court once formally charged with the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

In a separate incident on Friday, officers made a second arrest in the Better Life Informal Settlement after acting on a tip-off.

Police apprehended a 23-year-old male suspect, also finding an illegal firearm and ammunition in his possession.

"The search resulted in the discovery of a 9mm pistol and 31 rounds of ammunition," said Gwala. "The 23-year-old male suspect was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He will make his first court appearance in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once charged."
