Marking World Diabetes Day on Friday, the City of Cape Town is urging young people to make healthier lifestyle choices to prevent Type 2 diabetes.
Clinics across the metro report a worrying trend: more younger residents are being diagnosed with the condition.
Diabetes occurs when the body struggles to regulate blood sugar, which can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, and vision problems.
Francine Higham, mayoral committee member for community services and health, emphasised that prevention starts with everyday habits.
"Healthy food choices and regular physical activity can greatly reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. You’re not too young to start making better choices for your health," Higham stated.
City officials recommend the following actionable steps to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes:
Hydrate: Swap sugary drinks for water.
Eat more fibre and fruit: Choose foods high in fibre and increase fruit intake.
Stay active: Engage in regular physical activity.
