The African National Congress (ANC) said it is deeply saddened by the passing of South Africa’s first democratic ambassador to the United States (US), Dr Franklin Sonn.

Sonn died on Saturday at his home in Cape Town at the age of 86.

He was a respected educator and activist who led the ANC’s campaign in Cape Town ahead of the country’s first democratic elections in 1994.

Acting ANC spokesperson Nonceba Mhlauli said Sonn made an immense contribution to the anti-apartheid struggle.

“Dr Sonn was not only a diplomat, but also an anti-apartheid activist who contributed immensely to the anti-apartheid struggle and also the struggle for a free and democratic South Africa. To his family and friends, the ANC has truly lost a cadre, and the people of South Africa have lost a stalwart. May his soul rest in peace.”
