Suspended Minister Senzo Mchunu’s chief of staff, Cedric Nkabinde, has told Parliament that he only met alleged intelligence informant, Brown Mogotsi, once to facilitate a meeting about illegal mining in Stilfontein in the North West.
Nkabinde said this was the only time he met or facilitated a meeting between Mchunu and Mogotsi, who is also accused of trying to influence the decision to disband the political killings task team (PKTT).
Nkabinde was continuing with his evidence before the Parliament ad hoc committee investigating police corruption on Wednesday.
Cedric Nkabinde’s evidence continued where it left off from last week, when it had to be abandoned to correct discrepancies in his original statement.
Evidence leader Norman Arendse continued questioning Nkabinde about when he met Mogotsi and what Mogotsi's relationship was with Mchunu.
Nkabinde said that he facilitated just one meeting between Mchunu and Mogotsi to attend to the Stilfontein illegal mining incident, where several zama zamas died underground.
"In terms of my observation of Mogotsi, it was only for this Stilfontein, this arrangement for this meeting. After all these arrangements of this meeting, I have never seen Mogotsi coming to the minister or even facilitating any meeting for him to come and see the minister."
But Nkabinde said he didn’t know the rationale behind Mchunu’s decision to identify Mogotsi to assist in Stilfontein and assumed it was mainly because he’s from the North West province.
