It's almost the end of the road for CAA licence plates – what comes next?

Licence to... keep making Western Cape number plates

The CAA licence plates in the Western Cape will eventually reach the end of their run... so what happens after CAA 999-999 has been issued?

Spokesperson for the Department of Mobility, Muneera Allie, explains that the numbers are recycled.

"The eNaTIS [electronic National Traffic Information System for South Africa] system is programmed to release numbers 24 months after it has come off a vehicle's record."

As for when they expect the CAA numbers to run out completely, Allie says it won't be any time soon.

"A lot would depend on registrations, vehicle ownerships, certain numbers going back into the system... we will certainly have an indication beforehand, should we get close to there."
