The Democratic Alliance (DA) has hailed the G20 Leaders' Summit Declaration as a "significant and positive outcome" that reinforces principles crucial for global stability, security, and development.
The declaration, which was reached on Saturday, includes a commitment by member nations to work towards easing the debt burden on developing countries.
DA Leader John Steenhuisen emphasised that the priorities outlined in the declaration are vital for South Africa, particularly as the government seeks to implement urgent reforms to "turbocharge" the country's economy.
The party extended its congratulations to the South African government for successfully securing agreement on the declaration at the G20 Leaders' Summit.
The DA stated that the Leaders' Declaration would reinforce core principles essential to global stability, security, and development. These principles include:
Respect for international law and human rights.
The peaceful resolution of conflicts.
A renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation.
Steenhuisen stressed the importance of respecting the G20 as an institution:
"And what you think about South Africa, the institution is important and I think the institution of the G20 and the body of the G20. I think rightly requires respect that South Africa has shown it and that any host country has to show it."
As a partner in the Government of National Unity (GNU), Steenhuisen confirmed that the DA is committed to ensuring that the G20 commitments translate into tangible progress at home in South Africa.
