The Mayor’s Craft Market returns to the Cape Town Civic Centre this week, offering residents a chance to get an early start on festive shopping while supporting local small businesses.
The market, located on the second floor, will run on Thursday and Friday, and again next Monday and Tuesday, from 7 am to 3 pm.
The Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Theresa Uys, says the initiative is part of the City of Cape Town's skills development and poverty alleviation drive.
"It offers all registered vendors a free opportunity to sell their goods to City staff as well as members of the public."
She adds that exceptional craftsmanship will be on display, ranging from beadwork and leather goods to spices, treats, clothing and woodwork, all at affordable prices.
"It really is a very wide variety."
Uys says previous vendors have spoken emotionally about the difference the market has made, particularly after COVID, when many lost their income and the opportunity to trade.
"I think that is the big thing, to give hope and dignity to these vendors. I really encourage everyone to support this and to chat to the entrepreneurs because they are really showing such initiative."
