4 Cape Town police stations amongst top 5 in SA with highest contact crimes

Four police stations in the City of Cape Town appear in the top five stations with the highest number of contact crimes in the country.

The latest crime statistics reveal that four out of the five stations that are most overwhelmed by these cases are based in the city.

Contact crimes include offences such as murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, and robbery.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia released the national crime statistics in Pretoria on Friday, focusing on the period between July and August this year.

The Mfuleni, Nyanga, and Delft police stations, all of which are in Cape Town, recorded the highest number of contact crimes in the country.

The Inanda Police Station in Durban is fourth on the list, while fifth place goes to the Kraaifontein Police Station, which also happens to be in Cape Town.

The SouthAfrican Police Service’s crime registrar, Major-General Thulare Sekhukhune said that the murder rate in the Western Cape between July and September this year remains deeply concerning.

"In terms of murder, we have recorded decrease across all the months that make up this quarter. In terms of the provinces that recorded increases we again have the Western Cape and Northern Cape. All the other seven provinces have recorded decreases."

In Gauteng, the Tembisa, Johannesburg Central, and Jeppe police stations also appear in the top 10.
Meanwhile, the Temba and Mamelodi East police stations are the only ones in Tshwane that feature on the top 30 list.
