The Tshwane Council has voted to establish an ad-hoc committee to consider the next steps regarding a forensic report that found Deputy Mayor Eugene Modise was unethically benefiting from a company doing business with the municipality.

The move has been heavily criticised by opposition parties, who view it as a delay tactic instead of immediately sanctioning Modise.

A recently released forensic investigation report found that Modise benefits from Triotic Protection Services, which currently holds a multi-million rand contract with the capital city.

The report recommends that disciplinary action be taken against Modise.

It states thathe breached several sections of the Councillor’s Code of Conduct by not declaring his financial interest in a company currently in business with the municipality.

EWN understands that during a recent closed-door council meeting, the ANC sponsored a motion to establish an ad-hoc committee to consider the report's implications. The committee will subsequently make recommendations to the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) was quick to condemn the decision. DA caucus chief whip, Jacqui Uys, argued that stronger action should have been taken against Modise.

"Instead of recommending Modise’s removal from office, the ANC and its coalition partners voted to buy Modise more time."

The DA in Tshwane has announced that it will be opening a case of fraud against Modise.
