With the holiday season in full swing, both the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the City of Cape Town are urging the public to stay vigilant at pools and beaches.
Over the past three weeks, seven people have drowned in 13 incidents attended to by NSRI rescuers across the country.
Mayco Member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, said that the city has launched a “safe zone campaign” at Cape Town’s beaches.
Higham said lifeguards will be on duty daily, while the Identikids programme starts on Monday at designated beaches and pools.
"Our safe zones drowning prevention campaign reminds everyone to swim only between the red and yellow flags. Avoid alcohol at the beach. Stay alert to rip currents and always supervise children."
