Fire and rescue teams are continuing mop-up operations on Sunday at the historic Laborie Estate in Paarl after a devastating blaze tore through the Cape Dutch-style heritage site.

The fire caused significant destruction, levelling the estate’s restaurant and the first wing of the accommodation facilities. Crews remain stationed at the property to monitor remaining hotspots and ensure the site is secure.

INVESTIGATION TO FOLLOW
Zulfa Peterson, representing the Drakenstein Municipality, confirmed that while the fire broke out shortly after midday on Saturday, the specific cause remains unknown.

"Crews remain on site and are actively monitoring hotspots to ensure the area stays safe," said Peterson. "A full investigation will begin once mop-up operations are complete."

SEPARATE BLAZE CONTAINED
In a separate incident within the Cape Winelands Municipality, the Berg River fire along the R45 has been successfully contained.

Spokesperson Jo-Ann Otto reported that despite the proximity to the road and surrounding land, no properties were damaged in the blaze.

"The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services and various partners report that the fire in the Berg River area adjacent to the R45 has been contained," Otto stated. "No damage to property was reported."
