South Africa continues to ramp up road safety efforts as high travel volumes continue into the new year.
Speaking to CapeTalk’s Clarence Ford, Alida Venter, CEO of Drive More Safely, highlighted alarming statistics showing that the country loses around 244 lives every 45 days due to road accidents.
She attributes the high death toll largely to impatience, lawlessness, and a lack of consequences for reckless behaviour.
“People are driving dangerously. We have had so many head-on collisions this festive season, it is scary,” Venter says.

She emphasises that obeying the rules of the road is essential to ensuring a safe holiday season.
Venter urges drivers to adjust their speed, maintain safe following distance, and ensure they are well-rested before taking on any long journeys.
She adds, “if the roads are wet, slow down, lower your speed. Rather be late than never”.
By prioritising road safety, drivers can protect not only themselves, but also other road users and their precious cargo.
