New Year's Eve is traditionally celebrated globally with fireworks, but there must to be limitations, including taking into consideration pets and other residents in surrounding areas.

Johannesburg's EMS spokesperson, Kagiso Phasha, is pleading with residents to use fireworks responsibly.

"Fireworks are only allowed on specific days and times, so setting them off outside permissable timeframes carries a fine."

The dates and times that allow for residents to discharge fireworks are 11pm on 31 December to 1am on 1 January, and then 7pm to 10pm on 1 January.

Phasha says it is illegal to use them within 500 metres of an explosives factory or petrol station. They are also not allowed to be lit along main roads.

On the controversial issue of pets, the bylaws state that fireworks are not to be used anywhere where animals are present.

He also warns that children must be supervised when lighting fireworks to avoid injuries.

Any incidents of people not adhering to the bylaws can be reported on 011 375 5911.
