The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has urged beachgoers to exercise caution during the full moon spring tide this weekend.
The full moon spring tide, which peaks on Monday 5 January, will affect tidal conditions for the next three days along the country's entire coastline.
NSRI spokesperson Andrew Ingram said this natural phenomenon occurs when the sun, moon, and earth align during the full moon phase, amplifying the gravitational pull on the Earth’s oceans.
"Higher high tides and lower low tides will be experienced throughout this weekend and into next week. Swimmers are urged to visit lifeguard-protected beaches, and anglers and hikers should exercise caution, especially during the incoming high tide".
Sharing further safety tips for beachgoers, Ingram adds, "Follow tide schedules, stay informed with local weather updates, and always prioritise safety. For emergencies dial 112. For more safety tips visit nsri.org.za"
