A last-minute content deal has brought relief to DStv subscribers which will see key channels being retained.

Canal+, owners of DStv struck a multi-year agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery, securing the continued availability of popular channels such as CNN International, Cartoon Network and the Travel Channel across their services.

Having earlier failed to renew an agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery could potentially have resulted in a mass exodus of subscribers, at a time when they already face competition from global streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.

Speaking to Stephen Grootes on The Money Show, Thinus Ferreira, Film and TV critic says a lot more changes are likely to happen.

"Who knows whether they're going to keep Showmax alive...we'll have to see whether M-Net still exists without HBO content or things like that on it."

"It's really going to shape up to be a very interesting year, to see whether they are going to spin off all of their sports content as a separate package. Or really do big things like that to try and stop the hammering of subscribers."
