CCTV footage takes center stage in DJ Warras murder bail application

The Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court is expected to hand down its bail judgment on Monday for the man arrested in connection with the murder of media personality Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras.

Victor Majola, a Soweto taxi boss, has been appearing in court since Tuesday for his bail application. The state presented its closing arguments on Friday, marking the end of this stage of the proceedings.

During the proceedings, Majola’s attorney, Dumisani Mabunda, attempted to use CCTV footage published by EWN on Thursday to bolster his client's case. The footage captures the moments immediately preceding the murder but does not show the actual shooting.

Stock was gunned down in the Johannesburg CBD on December 16. While the footage shows two men—the alleged gunman and an accomplice—Mabunda argued that Majola is nowhere to be seen in the clip, claiming this proves he cannot be linked to the crime.

State prosecutor Vincent Mochabela countered this argument by referring the court to earlier testimony from the investigating officer, Abe Montwedi.

Montwedi testified earlier this week that police possess additional footage. According to the state:

Majola is allegedly seen in footage recorded much earlier on the day of the murder.

The officer testified that Majola was seen sitting on a pavement with two other suspects for approximately 45 minutes.

The court has postponed the matter until Monday, when a formal decision on Majola’s bail application will be delivered.
