Motoring journalist Melinda Ferguson reports on the new-generation Volkswagen Transporter which she took on a hugely enjoyable road trip, and also highlights the new offerings VW will be bringing to South Africa in 2026.

The carmaker will be introducing a facelifted Golf GTI which incorporates ChatGPT, and the second-generation T-Roc with a full hybrid option, both very popular models on South African roads. While the timelines aren't yet available, Ferguson hopes to get more details at the VW Indaba taking place in February.

When it comes to the Transporter, the motoring journo is hard-pressed to find anything negative to say about this latest iteration of the vehicle that started out as the iconic Kombi.

The new range is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI engine offered in three power outputs - 81kW, 110kW, and 125kW. The 125 KW TDI is paired with either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Ferguson drove the 8-speed automatic, which she says was one of the smoothest rides she's ever experienced.

"It's so easy to drive; you actually feel like you're floating on air."

She also highlights the impressive turning circle of this passenger van, which is often a problem with some of these "big bus" type models.

Further pluses included the user-friendly tech in the cabin, which features a 13-inch touchscreen, and the premium feel of the interior.

You'd be paying over a million rand for this vehicle, but if you've got that kind of money it is worth it, she says.

The eight-seater Transporter starts out at R 1,081,700 for the Basic Auto, ranging to R1,167,400 for the EDITION at the top end.

There is also a Commerce derivative, priced at  R 1,055,200.

Ferguson rates the Transporter a "big, fat" nine out of ten.
