British-born forensic analyst Paul O’Sullivan has declared he is South African and has never been a "foreign agent."

O’Sullivan told Parliament that he came to South Africa almost four decades ago as a tourist and fell in love with the country, its weather, and how it had not been taken over by communist ideology.

O’Sullivan was giving evidence before the Parliament Ad Hoc Committee investigating police corruption regarding his background, how he ended up in South Africa in 1989, and his work in law enforcement.

He took the Ad Hoc Committee through his history, explaining how he first came to South Africa as a tourist. He added that he liked the country and decided it was a good place to live and invest. O’Sullivan also confirmed that he obtained his South African citizenship in 1989 before he joined the police as a reservist.

When questioned, he defended having three passports but denied claims that he is an agent for a foreign government.

"The multiple passport story is a convenience. And having taken the oath a short while ago, I want to remind everybody, having taken that oath I am stating clearly under oath I have never acted as a foreign agent in this country."

He also denied having any links to any intelligence agency, stating he worked hard as a police reservist before he eventually became a certified fraud examiner.
