Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the metro now has a record-low unemployment rate of 19.8%.

"This brings employment in Cape Town to a record 1.9 million people now working in the Mother City, and it also means unemployment has dropped into the teens for the first time now."

Hill-Lewis said that while the 19% unemployment rate for Cape Town is still too high, the downward trend is encouraging.

"We are especially happy for anyone who has found a job for the first time in the last year, and can now provide meaningfully for their families."
