The meaning of Ramadan: 'A month of intensive spiritual training'

Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, communal prayer, reflection, and community.

Awqaf SA CEO Mickaeel Collier shares some insights on its deeper significance.

"For us it's a month of intensive spiritual, personal training – where we constantly work on developing self-discipline, self-control, humility and compassion. But more than that, Ramadan teaches us to not only be physically restrained, but also restrained in our speech, in our behaviour, in our anger and ego."

Collier says the practice develops a consciousness in the follower's responsibility to God, family and society as a whole.

"Ramadan transforms the individual – but its ultimate purpose is to transform society."

He explains that the quest to help others also plays a big role.

"Ramadan is historically associated with increased charity, feeding programmes, and community support initiatives."

Collier explains the significance of the fasting element and how it teaches empathy and compassion.

"The abstinence of food and drink for up to 14, 15 hours during the heat of summer touches a little bit on the situation that is a very stark reality for many of our South African society members... it aligns that feeling on the physical level to that understanding that there are people within our communities who do not have access to food.

"It ensures that we are not isolated individuals, but we are collective members of a broader society and nation, who have these challenges.

"The true success of Ramadan is not measured only in how we improve ourselves, but how we uplift those around us... and I think that is the key message."
