The Western Cape government renewed urgent calls for peace within the taxi industry following deadly violence in Atlantis.

A taxi operator and a 14-year-old pupil were killed in a shooting incident on Wednesday, while two other pupils were wounded.

The attack took place as the driver was waiting to load pupils after school.

This sparked outrage, with officials warning that ongoing industry conflict was placing innocent lives at risk.

Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku said commuter and pupil safety could not be compromised.

"The Western Cape government strongly condemns this act of violence. The loss of a pupil under these circumstances is a profound tragedy," said Sileku.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis offered a R100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

"Anyone who can help should please come forward and can do so totally anonymously," said Hill-Lewis.
