The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has issued a rabies advisory for seals in Hout Bay, Cape Town.

Two seals have been removed from the area over the past week, one following an incident last week and another from Duiker Island on Wednesday.

NSRI spokesperson Andrew Ingram says a seal attacked a group kayakers last weekend.

He has urged swimmers, paddlers and divers to take sensible precautions in and around the water.

"While most seal encounters are not aggressive, we urge water users to remain cautious and to avoid approaching seals, whether on land or in water. Anyone bitten or scratched must wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek immediate medical attention," Ingram added.
