The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) says it's heartbreaking that taxi owners continue to suffer major financial losses when their minibuses are set alight without anyone being held accountable

Five minibus taxis and four sprinter buses were damaged in a fire at the Nyanga taxi rank on Friday.

The cause of the fire is still unclear, and authorities have yet to confirm whether it was deliberate.

CATA said if the blaze was deliberately started, police must leave no stone unturned to find those responsible.

This is the second such incident at the taxi rank in just over a year.

In February last year, sixteen taxis were destroyed in a similar blaze, but no arrests have been made in connection with that incident.

"It's sad to experience these types of acts at CATA region. Remember, it's not the first incident to take place, it's the second one, whereby our members are losing their vans because of somebody who decided to wake up at night and torch the vehicles," said CATA secretary Nkululeko Sityebi.

Despite the damage, taxi operations at the rank were not affected.
