Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate for Johannesburg Helen Zille criticised the city’s MMC for roads and transport, Kenny Kunene, accusing him of failing to address the city’s pothole crisis.
Zille was speaking at the Johannesburg City Hall on Sunday, where she unveiled her top priorities ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
One of those priorities is the state of the city’s roads, which she says have been neglected.

Zille said Kunene, who is also the deputy leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), has shown little regard for repairing potholes.
“Fixing a pothole has become such a rare event in Jozi that Kenny Kunene announced a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday to celebrate the occasion. I was really interested in how that would turn out, and I was watching closely on my phone. But then saw that even that was postponed. He couldn’t get to his own ribbon-cutting ceremony.”
Zille has also taken jabs at Kunene.
“No wonder he’s called Kenny Kunene of the pothole alliance. That is his party. Kenny Kunene represents the pothole alliance.”
Kunene has yet to respond to EWN’s request for comment.
