The acting Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Hilda Senthumule, said suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu "overreached" when he tried to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

She added that Mchunu was wrong to exclude KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi when he made the decision in December 2024.

Senthumule accused Mchunu of interference during her testimony before the Parliament ad hoc committee investigating police corruption on Tuesday.

She is the latest witness to accuse Mchunu of undue political influence.

Senthumule told the ad hoc committee that she only found out about Mchunu’s directive to disband the PKTT more than a month after he issued his directive.

She was asked by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema what she thought of the directive.

“Do you think it’s political interference for a minister to write a letter on the 31st of December disbanding the PKTT without consulting the top management of the police?”

Senthumule said she agreed.

“He could not sit alone and make those decisions. So, for me, operationally, I think, for the lack of a better word, I think he overreached.”

She said Mchunu should’ve also consulted with the interministerial committee, which could have led to a different outcome.
