Heritage Western Cape (HWC) has halted the proposed redevelopment of the Tafelberg site in Sea Point.
At a recent meeting, the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure presented its heritage impact assessment for the property to HWC.
The heritage authority found the assessment to be lacking, ruling that it does not meet the requirements of the National Heritage Resources Act.

Plans for the Tafelberg site to be divided into three parcels and rezoned for a mixed-use development, including a social housing component, are currently on hold.
HWC said the provincial Department of Infrastructure failed to provide a heritage-informed spatial framework for the entire property, including the Tafelberg School complex and its forecourt.
The heritage authority said a final decision on the site's redevelopment will only be made once a full spatial framework and public consultation process are completed.
The department has indicated that a response to HWC's concerns is imminent.
