Cancelled flights, costly visas: What war means for your next trip

International conflict can cause major disruptions to travel, including the immediate cancellation of flights and accommodation.

Because most standard travel insurance excludes war-related events, travellers face high personal costs when they must cancel or rebook.

Such is the case in the Middle East, where many South Africans are stranded and unable to get flights home, and several hopeful travellers have had to pay for a trip that has not happened.

Martini explained that major airlines such as Emirates and Etihad Airways have drastically reduced flights to and from the region.

As a result, many South Africans have turned to alternatives such as Ethiopian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific.

“It's a massive knock on our seats out of South Africa. We've got a rush towards all the other airlines, but the problem is that the availability is so limited."

One of the biggest concerns is what happens to a visa if your flight is cancelled.

Martini advised that visas are nonrefundable, and if you need to change your travel dates, you will need to apply for a new visa.

She emphasised the importance of being flexible and considering alternative routes, but warns that prices are skyrocketing due to limited availability and fuel shortages

“Be prepared to pay a whole lot more than you were expecting,” she said.
