COSATU slams BRPs as thousands of Post office workers face job cuts

As companies, including Tongaat Hullett and the Post Office, undergo business rescue, Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) General Secretary Solly Phetoe has slammed the system, saying it's failing workers. 

He's accused Business Rescue Practitioners (BRPs) of enriching themselves at the expense of workers. 

Phetoe was speaking in Pretoria on Monday at a union leaders’ gathering, calling for oversight from the Labour Court in this regard. 

Phetoe also said COSATU will be meeting with the Post Office BRPs, where nearly 6,000 jobs are at risk.

"We're going to listen to them. But our position is very clear. No liquidation to Post Office."

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy,  who was also at the gathering, weighed in on the system. 

"I think the root of the problem is in the legislation because BRP do not have to report to anybody in terms of the current legislation, they can do anything they like and they can do whatever they like. We’ve had all sorts of fights regarding SA Express and Mango. I think that we’re going to have to change the law as it stands."
