The Western Cape government has announced a major push to expand housing delivery, with more than R2 billion allocated to the Human Settlements Department.
MEC for Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers tabled a R9.86 billion infrastructure budget for the 2026/2027 financial year on Tuesday, promising to accelerate housing law reforms in the province.
Simmers said housing demand in the Western Cape is rising, as people continue moving to the province.
He said that key developments include Welmoed, near Stellenbosch, where more than 10,000 houses are being built.
Simmers said the Ithemba Project in Eerste Rivier is expected to provide around 2,400 housing opportunities, including community facilities and services.
"It is about the acceleration of dignity and opportunity for every citizen of the Western Cape."
He said the province is also unlocking inner-city land at Prestwich, Leeuloop and Founders Garden, aimed at bringing people closer to jobs and transport.
While Simmers insisted the new reforms will accelerate housing delivery, opposition parties believe the province is not keeping pace with the need for more housing.
