Western Cape Premier issues stern warning to drunk drivers

Premier Alan Winde has warned motorists who plan on drinking and driving on the province’s roads to think again.

The Western Cape government launched its Easter Road Safety Campaign in Khayelitsha on Friday.

Two drivers were arrested at a roadblock set-up on Friday morning, on Spine Road for drunk and negligent driving.

One motorist’s blood alcohol level was found to be more than twice the legal limit, while a 17-year-old was arrested after knocking down a traffic sign and attempting to flee.

Winde said that more than 500 traffic officers will be deployed across the province to enforce road safety over the Easter long weekend.

"The officers will be out there at roadblocks across the whole province, and this happens all the time, it's not as if it's just because it's Easter, we are always out there.

The premier added that hotspot areas will receive extra attention.

"The reason that we are here is that it's a hotspot, so we must make sure the deployment happens at a hotspot. We must make sure that we have police, traffic officials, and law enforcement officials at the high-risk times."
