Thousands of motorists have rushed to settle their traffic fines ahead of the Easter long weekend, as the City of Cape Town ramps up roadblock enforcement.

The city said it managed to collect more than R4.1 million during its six-day traffic fine roadshow, with an additional R11.5 million recorded through representations.

At the latest stop in Athlone, over 3,600 people queued to clear fines and outstanding warrants.

The municipality said those who took advantage of the roadshow can now stop at roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints with confidence.

Safety and Security MMC JP Smith said the strong turnout highlights the scale of daily traffic violations and the need for better compliance.

"The traffic fine roadshow is clearly growing in popularity, and our Traffic Service will continue to take these payment opportunities to communities. So, while we are grateful to those members of the public who have now handled their business, we sincerely hope that the hours in the queue and the money that was parted with are enough motivation to pay closer attention to the rules of the road."
