The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed it will prosecute individuals implicated in the Life Esidimeni tragedy following years of investigation.
The tragedy claimed the lives of at least 141 patients between 2015 and 2016 after they were transferred from licensed facilities to unregistered and ill-equipped NGOs.
The NPA said the decision follows findings from an inquest that concluded that several deaths were caused by negligence and systemic failures within the Gauteng Department of Health.
The court also identified individuals who may be held criminally liable for their role in the deaths.
Prosecutors said there is sufficient evidence to proceed, with charges expected to include culpable homicide.
