South African sprinting icon Wayde van Niekerk has officially withdrawn from the remainder of the ASA Senior Championships, choosing to regroup and reset for the duration of the 2026 season.
Despite showing impressive form on the opening day, the world record holder experienced physical discomfort following his victory in the semi-final heat. Van Niekerk had been a standout performer during the initial stages of the competition, posting the following times:
Heats: 10.15
Semi-finals: 10.10
Van Niekerk took to social media to address his supporters and explain the decision to prioritise his long-term health and performance for the year ahead.
"Unfortunately, I won’t be continuing at the National Championships this weekend. Thank you for all the support, it’s always a privilege competing in front of the Western Province crowd," Van Niekerk stated.

The sprinter expressed his gratitude to the local fans and offered his encouragement to his peers remaining in the competition.
"Wishing the very best to all the South African athletes who will be competing. My team and I will regroup, reset, and come back sharper for the rest of the 2026 season," he added.
While the withdrawal is a disappointment for fans hoping to see him in the finals, the move is seen as a strategic precaution to ensure he remains "sharper" for the international circuit later this year.
