The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the eThekwini metro has slammed the municipality for what its labelled unregulated protests affecting businesses in the city.

This comes after violent clashes between members of the March and March Movement and foreign nationals.

The civic organisation held a protest in the Durban CBD on Monday, calling for action against undocumented migrants

DA eThekwini councillor Sharmaine Sewshanker said, “Unregulated protests create conditions for criminal activity, including looting and muggings, further placing both residents and businesses at risk.”

She has also urged law enforcement agencies to act.

“We further call on the South African Police Service and metro police to act decisively to prevent violence, enforce the law, and protect both residents and businesses.”

The municipality is yet to respond.
