ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the party’s regional executive committee (REC) in Johannesburg has overstepped its authority by attempting to recall Dada Morero as the mayor.
At a briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday, Mbalula made it clear that Morero will remain in his position.
This comes after the REC resolved, during a special meeting over the weekend, to remove Morero from the city’s top post.

The authority to appoint a mayoral candidate in a metropolitan municipality no longer rests with the ANC’s regional structures but now falls under the party’s national leadership.
The party said this means only national leaders have the power to recall a metro mayor, and regional structures can no longer make recommendations for their removal.
It is on this basis that Mbalula said Morero will remain in his position.
“There is no mayor that is going to be removed by the region. I’m going to meet the region. The NWC [national working committee] is clear that what the comrades in Johannesburg have done shouldn’t be done.”
Mbalula is known as a staunch Morero ally and has on multiple occasions sworn allegiance to the mayor of the City of Gold.
