Kfm 94.5's EB Inglis got nostalgic about words people might not use anymore.
Listen below:
Words are powerful... while language evolves and meanings change over time, some words might become a distant memory.
For example, you might hear someone say something and think... "yoh, when last did I hear that word?!" #throwback
Hang on to that memory because EB's about to unlock some more reminders: dating edition, let's get into it:
- Make reg: asking a mutual friend (usually a cousin) to play cupid with someone you have a crush on because you might be too shy.
- Bymekaar: kissing... French-style.
- Jolling: casual dating (mostly likely includes getting bymekaar) without commitment. Jolling can also refer to the act of cheating. In a sentence this might sound like: "hulle twee jol" or "hy jol op sy vrou."
- Speening: the opposite of jolling - you're in a relationship, it's official and serious, planning a future is involved.
- Kap 'n baat: asking someone to share lekker dyt/food. Not willing to share? The only correct response is: no guns.
- Mosage dyt: typically the category of food that involves a lot of oil, sauce, slap chips, and anything masala... definitely not a salad.
- voetjies hang: there's only one driver with a car, everyone else along for the ride are passengers because they don't have a car or licence. Their feet are free to hang while yours clutch, break, and accelerate to the destination.
- Barakat: while this is an Arabic term that translates to "blessings" or "gifts". The colloquial context typically refers to the social tradition of giving leftovers from an event to guests, usually given and taken home in paper plate with a serviette to cover sweet treats and/or savouries - if you know, you know.
And that's EB's trip down memory lane - ah, words can take you through so many eras, right?!
Of course, the K-fam also got involved with this one.
