One person was shot dead and two others were injured when a residence manager opened fire on the protesters.
It's alleged that students attacked the man and his family and torched his car on Tuesday.
Calm has been restored on campus following the disruptive scenes.
Students are carrying their bags in the rainy weather, leaving the institution as they wait to hear when classes will resume.
Some said they were leaving because of the protest, while others were going home for the Easter holidays.
Students said they wanted to support the family of the deceased person, whom the institution said was not a registered student.
Student representative council (SRC) president Balungile Madikizela said: "Our priority would be to communicate with the family.
"I think decisions like that will then follow afterwards to say what is the way forward. In the interim, we just made sure academic activities are suspended until further notice."
Although there were visible police on Tuesday, none of them have been spotted near campus on Wednesday.
The institution’s main gate also has no security.
