Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has announced plans to end load reduction within the next 12 months.

Load reduction refers to the intentional interruption of electricity in specific areas where the network is overburdened.

He was speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria about the Department of Electricity’s interventions.

Minister Ramokgopa reminded the public of his promise to end load shedding in the country. Since taking office, he has implemented measures to achieve that goal, including the use of load reduction.

He highlighted that the country’s generation capacity has risen from 43% in 2023 to 70% in 2025.

"What I want to say to the country is, we will end load reduction in the next 12 months, once we get the necessary cooperation. There are parts of the country where we are confident we will get that cooperation and there are parts where we know it will be difficult," Ramokgopa said.

He added that this is the first time Eskom has surpassed the 70% energy availability target since it was introduced by the board.
