Growthpoint Properties has announced it's started construction on the Sandton Drive Link Bridge – a project it says will enhance safety, accessibility and connectivity in Joburg's Sandton Central.

The bridge will provide a direct pedestrian route over busy Sandton Drive between Growthpoint’s office building and the popular Sandton City shopping centre.

It physically and symbolically unites both sides of Sandton Drive; integrating offices, residences and retail spaces into a more cohesive precinct, the company says.

Stephen Grootes talks to Timothy Irvine, Asset Management Head for the Office Portfolio at Growthpoint.

Irvine emphasizes the need for employers to make their staff's work space attractive and convenient in this time especially of the hybrid work model.

But the Link Bridge is not only for the benefit of Growthpoint, he emphasizes.

"This is not directed only at our property at1 Sandton Drive; it is related to the precinct, and it really is intended as an infrastructure investment to make the area more attractive and usable for all the people in that area."

"There's a definite connection between that area of Sandton and up northwards as well towards Sandton Summit so it is really a pubic amenity."

The Link Bridge will be open to the public from Sandton City during the day, with limited controlled access at night.
