‘It’s 4 and counting’: Sipho Chaine on Orlando Pirates’ historic MTN 8 victory

Orlando Pirates made history over the weekend, becoming the first team in South Africa to conquer the MTN 8 for a fourth consecutive season.

Tshepang Moremi scored two goals in extra time while Mabasa scored a third to cement a 3-0 win over Stellenbosch FC.

With a total of 47 goals to his name, Mabasa also became the second-highest goal scorer for the club in PSL history.

“I am very proud, not only of myself but of Orlando Pirates as a whole…. When I got to the club, I think the club had something like an eight-year trophy drought… We are the generation that managed to change that.”

“Cup finals are pressure games… We played Stellenbosch in the league not so long ago, leading 2-0, they came back and we lost the game 3-2 so those are the types of things that keep brushing on your mind even when you’re leading.”

The Buccaneers have their sights on the Betway Premiership trophy.

Despite a shaky start to the season, the players remain optimistic.

Pirates have finished the league in second place for the last two seasons.

“We kind of let ourselves down the last two to three seasons when we felt like we could have gone a step further than what we did… The biggest one that everyone is looking for is the league, and it’s not different this season.”
