Durban City FC goalkeeper Darren Keet reflects on his remarkable career on the field.

He made the difficult decision to leave his family behind in Cape Town to sign a one-year contract with Durban City FC ahead of the 2025/26 season.

He was among nine players who moved from Cape Town City FC following its relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

Keet achieved 104 appearances for the team before its heartbreaking relegation, which he attributes to scoring challenges.

“We got a good team together… We just couldn’t score goals. We scored 15 goals the whole season and managed to keep 10 clean sheets. So, when you’re having almost as many clean sheets as goals scored, it's clear to see where the issue was,” he says.

Keet says the past four months in KwaZulu-Natal have been positive, and that he has developed a strong working relationship with both the teams and players.

He was familiar with coach Gavin Hunt, with whom he won three trophies at Bidvest Wits.

“For me, the most important thing was to go to a team where I am wanted… I made it very clear that I want to play,” he says.

Post Bidvest Wits and pre-Cape Town City, Keet went to Belgium to play for KV Kortrijk.

He reveals he wanted to stay in the PSL, but despite interest from Mamelodi Sundowns, a contract never materialised.

“I know there was interest, I know they spoke to my manager at the time, but I never, ever saw a contract from them,” he says.
